The Story of Christmas in words and music, with Andrew Cruickshank and The Saint Martin Singers. ´God rest you merry´, a daily programme of readings and music for Christmas week, was first broadcast in the BBC Home Service in 1961 and has been repeated in various forms over the years since then. Now, with this recording, listeners can hear again the series of programmes as a whole, including some of their favourite poems and carols. The Saint Martin Singers date back to 1942, and owe their origin to a small band of fire-watchers at the church of St. Martin-in-the-Fields. Among the things which the Singers enjoy most, and have pioneered, are their programmes of music interwoven with poetry and prose to illustrate a theme, of which those you can hear on this record are examples in miniature. Christmas is always the most popular theme of all because the story of the Nativity has inspired the best in writers and musicians ever since St. Luke wrote the first narrative poem. 1. As I start writing this I am in the midst of curating a show of photographs by Charles March, for the rough warehouse visual arts space I work with in Bermondsey S.E.1. The conjunction of artist and location will strike some people as strange for many reasons. Charles March is best known nowadays as the Earl of March, holder of one of Britain’s great aristocratic titles (he is a direct descendant of Charles II, though the Merry Monarch’s French mistress, Louise de Kéroualle; Duchess of Portsmouth). He is also the gifted entrepreneur who has made his estate at Goodwood in West Sussex famous for both horse-racing and motor sport. What is he doing slumming South of the River? Answers to this question are easier to give than may appear at first sight. Bermondsey is very rapidly becoming London´s new artists´ quarter. The exhibition is, among other things, a celebration of that fact. Directly above our ground floor space at the Bermondsey Project are two floors of studios managed by the Bow Arts Trust. Three streets away is the enormous new gallery created from another and even bigger warehouse by White Cube. There are a number of other galleries and studio complexes in the vicinity. London is now a major centre for the international art world. The only other European city that houses as many studios is not Paris but Berlin. And Berlin does not have nearly as many galleries, public or commercial, which feature the latest developments in contemporary art. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Don Wang. In This Is All a Dream We Dreamed, two of the most well-respected chroniclers of the Dead, Blair Jackson and David Gans, reveal the band´s story through the words of its members, their creative collaborators and peers, and a number of diverse fans, stitching together a multitude of voices into a seamless oral tapestry. Capturing the ebullient spirit at the group´s core, Jackson and Gans weave together a musical saga that examines the music and subculture that developed into its own economy, touching fans from all walks of life, from penniless hippies to celebrities, and at least one U.S. vice president. This definitive book traces the Dead´s evolution from its humble beginnings as a folk/bluegrass band playing small venues in Palo Alto to the feral psychedelic warriors and stadium-filling Americana jam band that blazed all the way through to the 90s. Along the way, we hear from many who were touched by the Dead—from David Crosby and Miles Davis, to Ken Kesey, Carolyn ´´Mountain Girl´´ Garcia, and a host of Merry Pranksters, to legendary concert promoter Bill Graham, and others. Throughout their journey the Dead broke (and sometimes rewrote) just about every rule of the music business, defying conventional wisdom and charting their own often unusual course, in the process creating a business model unlike any seen before. Musically, too, they were pioneers, fusing inspired ideas and techniques with intuition and fearlessness to craft an utterly unique and instantly recognizable sound. Their music centered on collective improvisation, spiritual and social democracy, trust, generosity, and fun. They believed that you can make something real, spontaneous, and compelling happen with other musicians if you trust and encourage each other, and jam as if your life depended on it. And when it worked, there was nothing else like it. Whether you´re part of the new generation of Deadheads who are just discovering their music or a devoted fan ... 1. Language: English.
